Question:

Temporary structure for a Halloween display?

Every year my family and I decorate elaborately for Halloween. We usually do our setup in our yard and on our front porch (which is small). This year we want to enclose the porch (just with a plastic, like a tarp so it blocks out the sunlight for our display lighting) and create a small temporary entrance structure from the yard to the porch. Almost like a small archway entry. The frame will be made of wood and the side walls and the roof will be made of styro foam. The structure will be pushed close house but not attached to it in any way. The trick or treaters walk up on the porch, take a look at the display get their candy and leave. Would this cause any problems legally? The structure will only be up for about 2 to 3 hours on trick or treat night and then taken down. We don't charge anything or advertise for our display, it's just something we do for fun and for the trick or treaters in the neighborhood.

We want to do something similar to this, but as an archway entry to the porch, so it will only have two sides and a roof. About the same size, just slightly higher

  1. Should not be a big problem; but I'd check with county zoning just to make sure.

  2. No.  The reason is that it will be up only a couple of hours.  The worst that would happen is that the police could come by, and they won't and tell you to take it down.  Your city inspector will not even be working, so, go and have fun. Really.
