Hi my dad works in the south of france although he lives in the uk with the family (sounds wierd but hey) Basically he needs a car over there but doesnt have the time to drive it himself its a 1200 mile journey and would take a day or two.

I offered to drive it down for him which we thought would be a great idea although im only 18. i need insurance just for 5 days but most companies only offer it to people over 21. Maybe i should just take out a standard insurance policy and cancel it within 14 days during the "cooling off period" what would you recommend.

I do have my own insurance but it does not cover me for other vehicles

regards

  1. Talk to your agent about a temporary rider to cover you while delivering your dad's car to him.

    Generally called an "umbrella policy."

  2. Two things: in the US, purchasing insurance with the intent of canceling it within a few days just to cover you momentarily is considered fraud, and is a crime. It may be allowable in your part of the world, but it's criminal to do that here.

Second, just call your insurance company, tell them what you plan to do, and ask them to write you a rider policy for the short trip. they will charge you a small fee to cover you in the other vehicle, and you'll be legal.

  3. Hi, I am assuming that your dad is the insurance policy holder on the car that he's taking to France.

If this is the case, and therefore the car is already insured, I'm pretty ceratin you cannot then insure the same vehicle more than once, and the only way for you to get insured on that vehicel is for your name to be added to your dad's insurance policy as a "named driver".

    Hope this helps :)

  4. take out a short term policy that will cover you to dive the car legally. Insurance companies are wise to the cooling off trick and usually ask under 19's for payment in full to prevent that
