  1. i think the sizes you mentioned indicate the sizes of the handle or the grip, measured in increments in addition to the base 4 inches (i.e., 1/4 = 4 1/4" or four and a quarter inches).

the best size would be unique for each player. the best size would be the one that fits into your palm when gripping the racquet handle. you can try by gripping the handle at some shop to know your size.

if you find your size is in between two sizes (e.g. between 4 1/4" and 4 3/8"), i'd suggest you take the smaller size, then you can wrap an overgrip to make it fits you better. hope it helps :)

  2. Refer to this http://www.tennis-warehouse.com/Features... and also: http://tennis.about.com/od/racquetsballs...

Manufactured tennis racquet grip sizes range from less than 4" for juniors to 4 7/8" for the largest adult hands. This might not seem like much of a range, but the difference even 1/8" makes is surprising. Too large a grip can strain your hand, and prolonged use of too small a grip can injure your hand, wrist, and elbow.

    Hope this helped.
