what do Australian, double back, and switch mean in tennis?

  1. Madison, these are all terms used in doubles tennis.

    Australian is a term used when the partners play an I formation. The net player squats in the centre of the court ready to go to the servers side and the server serves as if playing singles from the mid hash and then covers the vacated side that his partner left. I forces the opponents to only use a down the line shot rather than the more common crosscourt.

    Double back means both player stay back or go back together. Usually both start and stay back if the opponents are too overpowering or too quick.

    Switch is when both partners change sides or switch sides usually when a lob is played. If the lob goes up over the net man he will call switch and run over to his partners side of the court allowing the partner to cross and cover the lob.
