Texas Holdem' at the casino?

I know how to play poker, but I have yet to play at a real casino. I just heard that when you play at Mohegan Sun or Foxwoods (one of them) that you play against the dealer.

Can someone explain to me how that works? Does that mean that the other people at the table.. theirs cards mean nothing to me.

And does that mean that I would have more or less of an advantage in playing.

Someone give me all the details... thanks.

  1. The game you are referring to is a holdem game that is played out on the floor among all the other table games. It's not poker as played in the poker room where the dealer deals the cards and you are playing against the other players. When you play in the poker all you are doing is renting a space at the table and the services of the dealer. That is what the rake taken out of every pot over $10 is for.

  2. Most large casino's offer free gaming lessons including poker and most other table games. It would be well worth it to take advantage of these since it will be your first time playing in a casino setting. There may be other people at the table, but remember they are there for the same reason as you.

We did it, and it took all of the pressure off when we sat down at a real play table. GOOD LUCK!

  3. Standard Texas Hold em is not played against the dealer.  The dealer deals the cards and keeps the game moving.  I do know that some Casino's have a Texas Hold Em table game in which you do play against the dealer, Ceasar's in Vegas has some of those tables, but I am not sure on how it is played.

  4. If you are playing poker as opposed to this new floor game, you play against others at your table.  I would suggest that you remember to tip the dealer when you take down a pot.  There are a number of reasons for this, just sufice to say, tip.  One other piece of advice, until you get a good read on your opponents, play very tight (not passive though).  To avoid any confussion, when you get there, ask one of the floor personel to dirrect you to the poker room.  You normally have to get your name put on a list, there will normally be a desk or some type of counter or podium looking piece of furniture with an employee standing there, tell them what you want to play, and it is not a bad idea to tip them a little bit too (some places this gets you moved up a lil bit). Good luck.

  5. You never play Texas Hold'em against the dealer. The only time I've ever seen a dealer be in the game is underground games where players deal.

My guess is that the person who told you this was confused. Because of the popularity of Texas Hold'em various tables games, slot machines, scratch and win cards etc have been put out with a Texas Hold'em association. Odds are that was what they saw and that is not real poker.
