  1. Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder that leads to decreased synthesis one of the globulin chains in hemoglobin. This leads to a blood condition called anemia. There are many different causes of anemia but in this case it is quantitative decrease in hemoglobin production which leads to decreased oxygen transport in the body. Thalassemia is prevalent in people that live in the mediterran region but occurs in other regions, especially where malaria (another blood disorder) is present.
