  1. They are taken at certain intervals to keep the amount of antibiotic in the body at a more or less constant level.

    It is important to finish the antibiotic even though you feel better because not all of the bacteria causing the illness have been killed. Bacteria multiply so rapidly that if they were not all killed they would continue to multiply and you may get sick again. These might become resistant to the antibiotic they survived.

    Bacteria may become resistant by mutating or changing the shape of the receptor site to which the antibiotic binds. The evolved bacteria would be selected in nature in the presence of the antibiotic.
