The Australian national anthem?

Who else doesn't like our national anthem, 'Advance Australia Fair'? The lyrics aren't that great. It's all just self glorification really.

"Australia is great, we are young and free and wealthy, our great island is surrounded by water, we have golden soil and many a plain to share for those who come to visit under our radiant southern cross". Basically that's what it's saying. The tune isn't that great either.

I think this would make a better anthem.

This version starts off a bit slow but you can skip ahead. This song is about the history and the people of Australia that make it what it is, because we are one. It is much better for a national anthem. I know it wont be changed because Advance Australia Fair is in Australia's history and we have had it for 100 years, many people would object.

I agree I have seen this song and our national anthem sung many times by school children at the place I worked and there is no contest it should be our national anthem the words are more appropiate for all of us.

Actually, not many Australians fought and died for the Australian flag, as in both World Wars Australians fought for the British flag, the Union Jack.

Of course we can change the flag.  Why not, we changed the National Anthem a few years ago, or have you forgotten that?

I love the chorus of "I am Australian" and would like to see it put together with the last verse to make our anthem (chorus first, then verse). That said, "Advance Australia Fair" has grown on me over the years and I wouldn't really mind if we kept it, though a new anthem and a new flag would be a great way to announce our republic to the world.

EDIT:

Since when did Australians fight and die for a flag? They fought and died for their country and its ideals and way of life. The flag is a symbol of nationhood and ours should wholly represent Australia without some foreign flag up in the corner.

I do agree that song, I Am Australian, does epotimise what Australia is all about.

It would make a good anthem, I don't know if it would be my choice though.

I didn't vote for Advance Australia Fair when we had the plebiscite back in the 70s.

(Advance Australia Fair has only been our anthem since 1984. Prior to that our anthem was God Save The Queen.)
