  1. It's a good question and there's probably no one definitive reason.

Australians love of a bet might have something to do with it!

Likewise horseracing has a rich history and tradition in Australia with the first races taking place just some 30 odd years after the country was settled.

A public holiday within the metropolitan area and extending throughout the state hasn't hurt. Impressive marketing in recent times has resulted  in crowds around 150,000 meaning racegoers have been turned away. Extraordinary in itself.

Also the Melbourne Cup has been blessed with some great stories and winners over the years. From the first winner, Archer, to Carbine, the immortal Phar Lap, the Irish trained Vintage Crop to the Japanese winner Delta Blues and so many others in between. And  then there's the modern day hero Makybe Diva.

The idea that a horse, in this day and age, could be durable enough to win two Melbourne Cups was bordering on the fanciful. To win three Melbourne Cup was to suspend belief and break every known maxim in racing. But it happened!

And that probably sums up the Melbourne Cup.

It makes heroes of horses and creates legends in the process.

There's nothing else like it !!

Hey Jocko, care to tell us of any of your Country Cup winners, good luck :)
