The Presidents Cup assistants announced
The captains of the International and the USA team were present at Muirfield Village to mark the one year tee off for The Presidents Cup. Jack Nicklaus was also present at the course he designed but he was to be more than just a host for the tournament.
Fred Couples named veteran Jay Haas to be his assistant at the 2013 Presidents Cup. Jay has accepted his offer and will be part of the team next year.
His other two assistants are not yet clear. Couples has said that he plans to bring on board the dejected Ryder Cup captain, Davis Love III.
“Jay has really been my right-hand man these past two Presidents Cups, and I know I couldn’t do my job as captain without him,” Couples said.
Fred said that he has not yet approached his good friend, Love, because he needs a bit of time to recover from the loss but he will surely make an offer to him.
To be World Hall of Fame golfer also made an offer to NBA legend Michael Jordan but he has not replied as yet. This is an interesting choice considering the two sports.
However, the surprise of the day came when the former Masters winner asked Jack Nicklaus to be his assistant at the Muirfield Village.
Jack turned the offer down owing to the fact that he was a sort of a host to the event, so it would be inappropriate.
"Freddie paid me a nice compliment by his suggestion," Nicklaus said Tuesday. "It was very thoughtful of him. I would love to, but I simply can't. I have duties as host, so that would not be the right thing to do."
Fred’s counterpart, Nick Price has announced all three of his assistants unlike his friend, Fred. The friendship between the two led to some interesting exchanges.
"One thing you've got to be careful with Fred with his laid-backness, he wants to win as much as anybody," Price said. "Even though he looks like he's about to fall asleep on the golf course".
The Zimbabwean, Price named Shigeki Maruyama, Mark McNulty and Tony Johnstone as his assistants for the 2013 Presidents Cup.
