The Ruinas del Tazumal... El Salvador?

Question

I'm interested in traveling to Santa Ana, El Salvador to visit the Ruins of Tazumal. Does anyone know if tourists are allowed to go ON the ruins and inside to explore???

The ruins of Tazumal are considered the most important and second-best preserved in the country (Joya de Ceren are the best preserved). The artifacts found at Tazumal provide evidence of ancient and active trade between Tazumal and places as far away as Panama and Mexico. The excavated ruins are part of an area covering 10 sq km (4 sq mi), much of it buried under the surrounding town. Archaeologists estimate that the first settlements in the area of Chalchuapa was around 1200 BC.

Although preserved, they are quickly deteriorating because of the amount of tourists it receives.  Tourism, commerce and vandalism are really taking their toll on the ruins.

Joya de Ceren is wonderful, but you are not allowed to go to the actual excavation sites (they learned from Tazumal).  Their museum is wonderful and extremely informative.  

Try to visit both.  Either way, it will be a very exciting experience.

You are allowed to go up and explore but...they are decaying and have not been taken care of actually they are now surrounded by small houses and vendors...I would really recommend going to Joya de Ceren it has ruins and a museum very well kept.  I think you would learn from there, If you are going to be around Tazumal then go for it, but don't miss out Joya de Ceren.  Enjoy your trip!
