I have to choose one to visit. In your opinion what is the most interesting. Any hints on best day to visit, how to get there?

  1. They are open on different days.  I took 2 guidebooks with me, and both had different, wrong days of closure.  I know San Sebastiano was closed on Sunday.  We went to San Callisto, which is the biggest.  These two are extremely close together, so if you could go on a day when both are open, you could easily visit both.

It was pretty neat.  You are required to go with a tour guide.  The tour itself I found a bit disappointing, because it seemed rushed and was much shorter than I expected.   Sunday was a really good day to go because a large portion of Via Appia Antica is closed to vehicles, so it's a really nice walk.

The best way to get there is a bus.  The metro does not travel out this far.  We did have to wait a long time for the bus to pick us up and take us back into the city, about 45 minutes.  But there are a couple of very close stops.

  2. The catacombs are much more interesting if you go as part of a tour group to explain the historical aspect.
