  1. All of the corn mazes that I have seen were cut into a regularly planted corn field.  They cut out the stalks and used them for cattle feed.  More than likely they already had the plan of the maze in mind before they planted because they make the maze every year, but they could make changes at any time before cutting the maze into the corn.  It would be very difficult to plant the corn in the maze pattern.

  2. before

  3. My favorite corn maize (how they spelll it) is in Fremont CA.

    Here is their website.

If you look over the website you can see that Brett & Nicole Herbst will help anyone turn their corn field into a custom maize.

this is from one of the pages on their website.

"2. Access to our "cutting team" or a video that trains you how to cut the maze yourself"

So the field is planted and cut into the design later.

Remember if you get hopelessly lost --- just eat your way out.

  4. Almost always before planting.  It is almost always the small farmer who runs a corn maze.  Often it's out of desperation on the small farmers part, as a way to try and bring in some income, and keep his families head above water.

P.S.  Your question is a bit open.  I totally agree with John.  The corn is planted in the normal way, they just go through and chop out the maze after the corn has grown.  They do not plant in a maze.  The decision to turn the field into a maze however is made before planting begins.  The field must be made safe enough for the throngs of people, and planning for porta potties, and advertising must be made well ahead of time.
