  1. The official languages of Canada are English and French, and that includes Montreal; most people speak both French and English. You should not have a problem being served in hotels, restaurants and stores in English, but don't be surprised if you are addressed in French first. You are, after all, in a French city. And don't expect an apology for not being addressed in English; we wouldn't apologized for speaking English to someone who speaks French.

You'll find all signs and outdoor advertisements are in French. Announcements in the metro will be in French only.

Someone here said that people in Montreal are just being pains for not speaking English to you, or are willing to speak English because you are going to spend lots of money. That is a purely American bias and is far from the truth and reality.

Come to Montreal and experience our cosmopolitan flavour and our French heritage. You will hear many languages being spoken in Montreal, and you will find many restaurants that serve cultural dishes from around the world.

  2. Its mostly french & english that they speak.  Most know how to speak english but some just want to be pains and refuse to speak it while you are there.  Be aware that most of the signs are in french.  I used to live in Vermont and traveled to Montreal often. If you are willing to spend $ while you're in Montreal they're willing to speak English.

  3. There are plenty of people in Montreal who don't speak English, but most do. If you're going as a tourist, most of the people you will need to speak to will know English. If you plan to move there, you'll find your life is easier if you make an effort to learn French.

If I had to guess, I'd say 25% of Montrealers speak little to no English, 40% are good to fluent second-language speakers, and 35% speak it as a first language.

  4. Honestly, pretty much everyone is bilingual. And a lot of the time, if they don't speak both languages, they understand both. So you can speak to them in English, and they'll understand you, but they'll answer you in French because they're better able to express themselves in that language. So I guess the more important thing is to be able to understand both.

  5. I'm english and I've lived here all my life. Its about 50% native french speakers and 50% native english speakers, but almost everyone is bilingual. You would be absolutely fine living in/visiting Montreal and only speaking English. Most signs are in french but it really isn't difficult (many words are similar in french and english) and youll pick up main words very quickly.

  6. almost everyone in Montreal, certainly those dealing with general public, are bi-lingual english/french  You can easily get by on English but they appreciate a try at french.   Further east on the North Shore up to Quebec City not so much..mostly french.
