Theoretical Physics?

Do things like string theory, general relativity, etc all revolve around mathematics? Should I be paying more attention in calculus if I'm interested in studying something in that field?

  1. physics in particular goes hand in hand with maths, in a beautioand powerful way.

I'd say you can't do well in  physics without maths and especially calculus.  So pay it the attention it deserves!

  2. i should think that maths is an important Field, without it maybe lots of scientific Fields won't be completely discovered and improved.

my advice for you is to like maths, and yes, if you want to study something in the scientific Fields, you should pay attention to be successful in the Field that you entered to study.

good luck... and i hope i helped you.

  3. Yes, if your thinking about anything science related... math will only help you... chemistry, physics, biology, statistics... everything.

  4. yes.

in fact, most of those ara are PURE mathematics.  No one has actually seen a "string".

You need both a good background in math AND the ability to mentally manipualte forms and dimensions (in your head) if you're going to be good at these things.

  5. The answer is a very theoretical YES.

  6. Your question is like someone going into the NFL in the future if they should pay better attention in gym.  Calculus in string theory and general relativity is like adding in everything else.  If you want to do that kind of physics you shouldn't need to pay attention in calculus, you should just get it.  Tensors, topology and abstract math is where you'll need to pay attention.

  7. String theory is almost pure mathematics. It has made not a single observable prediction. So you better like math if you want to do it - it may not even be real physics.
