Question:

Things to do in Cozumel!!?

Cruising to cozumel in about a month... we have looked up excursions and I am curious if we can not do the "beach" and shopping on our own with out being limited to the times and transportation required by the tour company?

How hard is it to taxi in Cozumel? And to insure we get to the correct places?

Any suggestions that may be off the beaten path, that would be safe and worth doing?

Thanks!!!

  1. Taxi's are EVERYWHERE!! Dont let any taxi tell you more than 5 dollars no matter where you go on the island and many will not make change, its best to pay in american dollars if possible in the cabs kuz sometimes they'll try to gouge you on the exchange. Most speak English.

My recommendations are take the cross island road and hit the tequila factory out there hahaha, they give you a tour and its pretty cool, there are some small ruins on the island on that same road. Theres also some cool bars and beaches. The bob marley bar is out there, all the way at the end (the road ends and bears right, Mescallitos is to the left, just follow the road to the right, skip the first two bars/beaches they're really cool but pretty expensive, after that they're fine) and Coconuts and they're both awesome places to eat and drink right on the beach.

Enjoy it there My parents live there, they went on a vacation and never waned to leave, so they didn't. All the locals are great and if you want to shop, go a couple blocks off the main strip, the prices are way better and they have the same stuff, it just isn't as convenient. Kick back have a Mojito or a Marg and do some shopping, Cozumel is my favorite place in the whole world.

  2. Rent a jeep and explore the other side of the island. (east side) Awesome views and some very interesting bar stops.

The jeep should cost you around $50. So much fun. The water on the east side of the island has current and undertow so be careful.

Good places to stop on the east side of tsland is Mezcalitos Bar and a good place to swim, Coconuts Bar & Grill(great views)  Chen Rio (good place to swim)

You can shop in town and along the way stop at one of the many beaches.  Some of the beach places have a fee to get in ($10) If you do a search on beaches in Cozumel, you can get more information.

If you don't want to drive, cabs are not expensive. Always ask how much in dollars before getting in the cab. Ask the cabby the best beach place to go.

Love Cozumel, it's a beautiful island. No need to change money to pesos. Dollars are accepted every where.

    Have fun

  3. Cozumel has on of the best taxi systems. They charge a straight rate per ride not per person. Its quite inexpensive. I have always felt safe there.I love going to Chankanaab national park for snorkeling. You can just pay a daily fee for admission. The shopping is great. Try the coconut shrimp at Bucket O Shrimp with mango sauce.

  4. Yes you can go to the beach on your own and then go shopping.  There is a couple of beaches that are free to get on to.  One is Carols and Charlies.  The other is Paradise Beach.  They are both really nice and the taxi driver will know where to take you if you tell them either one of those.  Then you can go back down town when you leave the beach just tell the driver where you want to go.  The taxi will cost you a little bit of money. I will be there in September and we are going to the beach.  Have fun.
