I am going to Granada Spain for two weeks. I am going for an intensive Spanish course but I want to do things at the weekends and evenings/afternoons.

What places would people recomend/avoid. I want to know what the general impression people got of the place.

Thank you.

  1. The nightlife is outstanding. The tourist attractions are fabulous like the first guy says, but they have a very welcoming ambience in the little bars all around downtown, where it's customary to serve a little "tapa" with every glass of wine/beer etc. It's a myth that this happens everywhere (I lived in Valencia and it hardly ever happened) also, in Granada more than once somebody would take out a guitar and sing! Enjoy!

  2. Since Spain, excluding the beach, is considered "closed" during August, you're going to experience that a lot of non-tourist related places are closed.

As stated above, visit the Alhambra, Albaicin, and Generalife.  Also check out the Capilla Real and Catedral.  If you're into people watching during the post-amuerzo lull, the area between the Catedral and Plaza Trinidad is full of people.  At night, head toward Plaza Nueva or Calle Pedro Antonio de Alarcon for drinking fun.  After 4AM, head to Granada 10.  You should plan a trip either down to the Costa del Sol (Almenecar)or up to the villages of Las Alpujarras on one of the weekends.

My general impressions of Granada is... awesome!  There's not too many other places in Spain where you can get free tapas (I recommend the bars near the bus station on Camino Ronda, Glorieta Arabial or along the Rio Genil).  The city isn't so large that you can't walk the whole thing, and it's close to the beach in the summer.  I never had any problems with crime and felt safe walking around.

    Have fun.  I'm envious!

  3. Obviously, Visit the Alhambra and Generalife, this is almost a full day activity. Explore the Albaicin on foot. CHeck out the park on the North side of the Alhambra. See a Flamenco show. Go up in the Sierra Nevada. You are also close to the Costa Del Sol.  General impression, very interesting city.  You will a great time.
