Question:

Thinking about an equipment upgrade?

I've been hitting a Taylormade R5 XL, Neutral bias for about a year. I'm pretty happy with it, but I would like to have matching 3 and 5 woods. These are discontinued clubs now, so my question is, is it time to upgrade everything, or stick with a driver that I dig, and just upgrade my fairway woods? There is an asthetic quality to having matching clubs, but when it comes to getting the most for the money, I have more desire than I have money.

  1. Drivers, much like putters, are all about comfortability.  If you like your driver, don't mess with it.  I just got a new driver and I wish I had my old one back.  My suggestion would be to get new fairway woods only.  Matching wood sets are overrated.  The performance is what matters most.

  2. You don't really need a equipment upgrade. You could probably find what your looking for on ebay. They have discontinued clubs there. Also look on Callaway preowned the website, they have used discontinued clubs.

  3. Rock Bottom Golf's got some r5 and r7 fairways in stock, depending on the loft and shaft you want they may have what you are looking for:

If you decide to buy there, use Slick10Off during checkout and you'll get 10% off your order's total.

  4. You can also check with Play It Again Sports, I just purchased a full set of Taylor Made woods from someone that couldn't hit them for less that $200.

  5. I have a lot of equipment at my disposal...

...and I still play the same old sticks I know, love and am very familiar with. I have two sets of old fairway woods (callaway steelhead III's and orlimar trimetal plus) that I rotate depending on how I feel, but have had no reason to change.

I don't consider most new models "upgrades." They're necessary annual business product line "changes" (they have mouths to feed, after all, and their products are CLUBS that obviously aren't designed to disintegrate in a year).

FWIW, I like the TM R5 line. Good clubs.

  6. Go with A newer Taylormade 3 wood and 5 wood.  Also look at Nickent woods. there popular on tour, especially their rescue clubs
