This is a sick feeling?

My father is an obnoxious and childish person. And all throughout my childhood I wanted his respect and would do or say anything to get. He has never treated me in a kind or supportive way. Looking back on it he's only badgered me and made me uncomfortable. But I put up with it not knowing any better, thinking he was right to treat me that way and so he basically showed me that I wasn't respectable as a child. And I've only just now realized how much I don't respect him. How can I get past feeling sickened by the fact that for so long I even dishonored myself just to win the approval of this person who now disgusts me?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

I know exactly what you mean. I am going through a similiar thing where I have just realised something about another person that I have never understood before. I feel kind of betrayed since I have tried so hard to make an impression on this person and they simply aren't capable of understanding where I am coming from. The only way through this is to acknowledge that you are a better person than them. You have always been a better person and probably always will be. That you have tried to bring them up to your level and they just can't get there isn't a reflection on you. It is a reflection of them and where they are at. Hold your head high. Acknowledge your desire to have them be a better person but accept that they can't right now but you can be. It isn't a bad thing that you sought their approval. It just means that they weren't capable of being good enough for you.

Actually if you can get it in your head that this is his problem and

he is missing out on a great relationship with you by his actions, then if you  do get back together in a mature way practice not thinking of

whatever you did to please him, You are a great person and he has

a problem and you do not have to solve his problem..
