  1. Generally, most people wanting to have a Murder Mystery party would buy a pre packaged Murder Mystery game, like the "How to Host a Murder".  This gives  you everything you need - besides guests.

Usually, the ways these work is that each participant receives a booklet that contains clues they know, and information they have to reveal during a 'scene'.  You aren't allowed to lie, so all the clues will come out over the course of the game.  The game is broken up into scenes - usually with a tape or CD proving narrative in between - so you don't know the whole story at once.

In the last scene, the murder learns how they are - and is allowed to lie from that point onward.

These can be a lot of fun, as long as everyone involved is into the spirit of it and enjoys play acting and being silly.  I've done a lot, and they've usually been a great time for everyone.

Its quite possible to come up with your own, but if you have never played one before I'd highly buying a professionally published game to see how they work.  The 'How to Host a Murder' series is good, but usually designed for 8 people.

    Good luck and have fun!
