Threading Memory Craft 8000

Question

I have a new (to me) Memory Craft 8000. The problem I am experiencing is in threading the machine. The first step of the threading process is to pull the thread down through a thread guide. But the guide does not hold the thread at all. The thread simply slips beneath the guide and totally loose of it and then below the second set of guides as well. When I try to sew with the machine threaded in this manner, the thread breaks. I have consulted the manual and it looks like I am threading it properly. Is there some trick to threading this machine that I do not know or is the first guide perhaps broken (it does not look broken)? I would be so grateful for any knowledge anyone might have of this machine. Thank you.
