Threatening/harassing phone calls???

My wife and I have been receiving threatening/harassing phone calls from a former friend and even received a visit from him as well. He is threatening to beat me then kill me and for me to meet him some where so he could do it etc... I filed a police report yesterday after receiving 7 calls in a row and to my surprise but satisfaction this is considered a felony in California. I want to know what are the steps the police department is going to take on my former friend and what I might be asked to do in the meantime. I gave them all his info, his address, phone#, name, & Bday everything. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

call the cops then the phone company to block it

Another step to take is go to the court house to get a protection order. Then if this person breaks the order the police can immediately arrest him.
