Question:

Throat Slit?

If someone's throat has been slit from ear to ear to the bone

1. How many minutes will it take the person to bleed to death?

2. If you saw a person like this, could you not just compress the two carotid arteries to prevent the rapid exsanguination at least till it can be surgical corrected. There will still be good blood flow to the brain via the VERTEBRAL ARTERIES at the back of the neck.

  1. ummm... why do u wanna know, is my question. answer that and ill answer yours

  2. I would think they would die very, very quickly

Less than 2 minutes if I had to guess

I don't know much about the human body in that area, so I'm guessing they would die either way, based on the way you described it

  3. omg gross please i got the friliesss

  4. 1. Not very many.

    2. This is assuming you are there right when it happens. You would not be able to fully close off the arteries so no blood will seep through. There will be too much pressure to prevent bleeding to death.

  5. No, because no amount of pressure will stop the bleeding, the pressure needed would strangulate the person, as far as the Vertebre Arteries they are not large enough to supply the needed blood flow to the brain. Simple enough.

  6. In the movies, I suppose, but you can't play Dutch Boy like that in real life. Exsanguination will be very rapid. Complicating the situation, with that injury, you'd expect a good deal of the leakage would enter the trachea.

  7. Two minutes

  8. Cerebral blood flow is 750 mL/min. about 2/3 of that going throught the two internal carotids, and 1/3 through the vertebral arteries. This is about 500mL running through the two carotid arteries per minute and 250mL through the vertebral arteries per minute. The human body contains about 5 L of blood.

    So to answer your question

    1. About 10 minutes

    2. Yes you could.

But usually a crime like this does not occur in a public place where the patient can be found quickly and by the time a patient with a throat being slit like you described is found, it is almost always a coroner's call. Unless it was an accident at workplace, but usually an injury such as this is suicidal/homicidal and the victim is not found until it is already to late
