  1. The newer GE evolution series have a EPA sticker on them certifying they meet emissions standards.

Not sure which tier it is though.

    Now I gotta look.

Funny thing though, even the worst locomotive out there is far far better than the cleanest burning semi truck when you factor the amount of ton/miles they get per gallon of fuel.

  2. I believe EPA Tier 3 regulations were just approved this past March and do not go into effect until 2012 so therefore railroads and locomotive builders have not yet had time to begin implementing the new measures.

Still, new locomotives like the EMD SD70ACe, GE Evolution Series, and RailPower Green Goats (which run mostly off of stored batteries) are quite environmentally themselves (they meet Tier 2 status).

  3. On the UPRR our Genset engines are tier 3 locomotives. And recently i had the future of road power on my train which was a GE Evolution Hybrid unit # 2010 which will be a tier 3 when it's released for regular service in 2010.It has large banks of sodium chloride batteries which charge while in dynamic brake and discharge under power to reduce fuel consumption by an estimated 23,000 gallons a year according to the GE techs that rode with us.
