Tim Payne is given ban
Wasps Tim Payne will miss two weeks of rugby after he clashed with Gloucester’s Jim Hamilton and Brett Deacon.
The incident took place during last month’s Premier League game at Kingsholm. Gloucester went on to win the game 22-20, but there were a number of incidents in an ill-tempered game.
Payne pleaded guilty to stamping on Hamilton and striking Deacon and was handed down a two week ban by the Rugby Football Union disciplinary panel. The Wasps loose head prop was issued with one week for each offence.
Deacon also pleaded guilty to his role in the incident and was handed a one week ban after he reacted to Payne’s stamp and lashed out at the England international.
The two players were both given 10 minutes each for their role in the fight during the match. Payne’s stamp on Hamilton was the initial incident that caused Deacon to stand on Payne before both players traded blows and the two sides became involved in the
squabble.
Deacon will return on 12 October while Payne should return to the Wasps team from the 19 October.
Payne will miss the Wasps Heineken Cup match against the champions Toulouse on Sunday and will be unavailable for a home game against Glasgow the following week.
The loss of Payne will be huge for Wasps. The player has toured with the British and Irish Lions and played for England. His experience and strength will be sorely missed, particularly against Toulouse who have one of the toughest front-rows in club rugby.
The scrum could prove to be a weak point as the Wasps prepare for the journey to France and Toulouse are bound to try and exploit the absence of Payne.
Deacon will not be as big a miss for Gloucester who will lose the back-row forward for the Amlin Challenge Cup match against Agen.
