  1. If you dont have a VCR then dont select record to VCR!

  2. When you chose to record to a VCR you are supposed to hook up a VCR to your cable box. When the show is played it shows the show on TV and the output records to the VCR you plugged in to the cable box.

If you have a DVR then you can record to the hard drive in the cable box and then when you want to watch the show it will be played from the hard drive inside the cable box, that is how you can watch a show that has been recorded with no tape. This is the way things are done now (all high tech), it is all digital and will not deteriorate.

You have to figure out what you have. If you have digital cable then you most likely have a DVR that does all the recording inside itself. The record to a VCR is if you want to hook up a tape recorder to it and turn it to a VHS tape. There really is no need for a VHS tape unless you want to take the shows with you. Then there is a bunch more to do but it is easy and all high tech to some people. Good luck with your recordings.

Your best bet is to call the cable company and ask them. If it was just installed then tell them you need to have a tech come out to your house and show you how to fix it or how to make it work. If you can not make it work, why do you want to pay for it?
