  3. It is 360 degrees of longitude to go all the way around the world.

There are 24 hours in a day so there must be 24 time zones in the world.

So once around the world is 360 degrees and it is also 24 time zones. So each time zone is 360/24 = 15 degrees.

Real life time zones are not exactly 15 degrees wide, since the dividing line would probably occur at an inconvenient place. The time zones are stretched or shrunk so that the time changes occur far away from cities..

Time zones were invented so that the middle of the night would occur around midnight, and the middle of the day would occur around noon no matter where you were in the world.

Scientists and engineers don't use local time. They use a standard time called Greenwich Mean Time, or Universal coordinated Time, or Time Zulu. These standard time don't change from summer to winter.

  4. It is because the Earth rotates every 24 hours. The Earth rotates laterally, which means from east to west. That's why it is divided into longitudes, not latitudes. The longitudes denote the differences in time since they divide the Earth from east to west.

"Since the earth rotates once every 24 hours and there are 360 degrees of longitude, each hour the earth rotates one-twenty-fourth of a circle or 15 degrees of longitude."
