Timing a chevy 383 stroker

I need to time a 383 stroker the dist. wasnt tight and moved so can some one tell me how to time this in full detail never done this before and can you advance time to get more power

  1. this should help, but you probably should get a repair manual for that car.

      the engine should be set so the front pointer is at the TDC on pulley,  then drop in the distributor with the rotor pointed like the photos show.  if it doesn't fire right, it may be 180 out, so turn it over one time and reset the distributor.. if it's in, use a timing light hooked to #1 to read the pulley, try to set it at 8 degrees. dont forget to unhook the advance hose.
