Timothy hay okay for gerbils?

my rabbit roams my house since i have no cat or dog and somehow there was a piece of timothy hay on the edge of the opening on my gerbils cage, curious what they would do i gave it to them, it was a very small piece and the male ate it right away. so i put a but larger piece in there and they went crazy over it fighting to eat it, i have never seen them act like that, is it okay to give them more? can a lot of it hurt them?

not so important: i asked a question before, why is my gerbil so fat, but after a few days of observation i swear to god that they get really fa at night when they sleep and its like they run off the weight in the day because they go back to their normal skinny selves, anyone seen this before?

you don't have to answer that part

  1. i am not sure if it would hurt to give it to them , but the bag does say for small animals too, and what could it hurt they probably eat their bedding.

  2. It's perfectly fine, Gerbils just LOVE to chew up and destroy everything so this hay is great for them. I use similar stuff which they go absolutely bonkers over, "Corn Stuff", it's dried corn straw...

Give them a big dollop of the stuff every couple of days and they will become your new best friend...!

  3. Perfectly fine....I buy my rabbits timothy hay...I've never tried to feed the gerbils timothy..I think im gonna go check that out....see what happens

  4. Timothy hay is great for gerbils. I used to give my gerbils large handfuls and they loved it! It's great for them to chew on. Plus, it really bulks up their bedding.

As for your gerbils appearing fat, are you sure it's just not the way they're sitting or how they're puffing up their fur? I've noticed that sometimes my gerbils look fat. However, it's just the way they sit or them puffing up their fur. They're athletic and lean, so I'm wondering whether or not your gerbils are similar.

  5. Not too much. Be careful of timothy hay containing mites as well, most of the pet store stuff does.

  6. timothy hay is perfectly suitable for gerbils. it can be used as a treat or  it can also be used as bedding.  timothy hay will not hurt them.
