Tipping at buffet meals?

If you go to a buffet, how much are you supposed to tip the server?

We went to a nice restaurant that had a buffet that was complete from soup to dessert, a couple weeks ago.

The hostess seated us & gave us menus and glasses of water. The server took our orders. We ordered buffet, and coffees.

We served ourselves to a sumptuous meal. Soup, salad, entree, dessert.

All the server did was write down what we wanted, bring coffees & coffee refill. A bus person took away used plates. It was the host who brought our bill and some after dinner mints.

The bill was $34, for the two of us. How much should the server get as a tip?

  1. 15%  and the chances are that the three og them are making minimum wage and they are splitting your tip!!!

  2. since thye do less work, I leave 10%

  3. I would have left $5.

You enjoyed the meal and received the necessary service to do so, right?

    Why not tip accordingly?

  4. If the service was good by all means leaves a few bucks for the tip, Remember, usually servers work for peanuts in the 1st place..

  5. Normally if ur at a buffet u serve urself like u said so i would leave 3.00 for tha both of yall that means 1.50 a piece cause u serve urself that 5% of ur bill . i think a 3 dollar tip for bringing tha menu n water out is good at a buffet now if it was a major restaraunt i normally leave 10% of my bill they do wk there .

  6. I would have left $6.00 because trust me she had to tip out that hostess and bus boy at the end of the night.

  7. i usually tip a dollar a drink or if you drink a lot no more than $2 for every $15

  8. it depends...most buffet places pay there servers about 5 an hour so seeing as how all she did was get drinks (much like a bartender) four dollars would be more than enough for them.

  9. I usually tip $2 or $3 depending on if the server keeps my glass filled with Coca Cola/Pepsi.  I've been known to leave a buck if I have to ask for a refill multiple times.

  10. 15% is the rule of thumb. BUT it is really up to you and depends on the service that was provided. If they  messed up in anyway then you might consider giving them less.
