Question:

Tips for Playing Scrum Half?

by  |  earlier

I played hooker for my school for 4 years, I stopped playing about 2 years ago, and have just joined a club. Our pre-season just began and the coach mentioned playing me at scrum half. I was wondering if anyone had any hints and tips to give me, I'm a bit nervous as I have usually played as hooker, and occasionally flanker.

Cheers.

  1. Buddy you need a few things, Time, experience at the postion and need to watch past games of players like, justin Marshall, George Gregan, Van Der Westhuizen.  These 3 were stand outs in there time but all had different area's of strength.  You need to decide where your area's of strength are and train putting alot of training in area's that you need to improve.  Passing would be an area you need to develop, then tackling and kicking.  Kicking yourself should be a last option or tactical option but never your first choice of play.  Work hard and play hard, you will develop with time.

  2. Don't try and be a ninth forward, you'll make the other six backs very unhappy about being you being ball greedy especially if it's a cold day and they are standing around freezing their backsides off doing nowt. If you think the ball needs kicked up the park then throw it to the fly half or the fullback and let them do it, it's part of their job. On all other occasions try and get the ball out to the "threes" asap. When putting the ball into the scrum favour your hooker, you used to get caned by the ref (not straight) for that years ago but it seems to be standard these days.

  3. oh you will be fine
