Tips for a british accent?

I'm Veruca in the musical "Willy Wonka" and I need to speak with a british accent. I can do it somewhat, but I need a little help. Any tips or suggestions would be great :)

If you have PBS or cable, watch anything British. Or rent dvds out of Harry Potter and turn the picture down (so you don't get distracted) and listen to their accents.

Your standard Brit accent is quite clipped almost nasal, not drawling like Texan. Keep to a simple one, don't try to mimic Norhern England (e.g. Manchester) as it's too tricky and doesn't suit Veruca.

Anyone who lives in Britain or even visits Britain ever so often knows there isn't a typical 'British' accent. The differences between accents in England, Wales and Scotland vary immensely. These accents also vary greatly within each home-nation. I was often puzzled when people refer to a 'British' accent. This is only spoken by a tiny minority of British people yet it has earned this title, which is quite interesting.

Well I told my friend this trick. It may work if done right.

Say British Soldiers over and over and for some odd reason the dialect will change over.

Its a very forward nasal accent, best is to watch British films and listen to how they sound and start mimicing them. To learn at first its ok to go a little over the top ar first as if your making fun of the accent. Be careful when you are doing the accent not to slip into a southern draw its strange but it can happen.

But best to listen to the accent as much as you can here is a site where you can buy a tape or cd to help you with your accent and with proper placement of the mouth I have used these tapes with many accents and it helps me out a lot.
