In about 18 months time I'm planning on moving to australia for a year, working and all that jazz. I've found all of the plane information, general housing costs food prices etc. I was just wondering who has done this and if you have any tips. I'd like to know approx how much money i should have in my pocket when i get there. and if theres any general tips people can tell me about migrating. thank you in advance

  1. First off, what visa do you have, or plan on getting as you seem to think that you will be allowed to take up paid employment?

There is a rather major difference between "migrating to Australia" and "moving to Australia for a year".

Migrating would involve permanent residency, do you have that?

Moving for one year would, probably, involve a "young persons holiday visa", which is available to those aged 18-30, is valid for one year, and grants the right to work - but for no longer than 3 months for any one employer. Have you applied for one of these?

You can't just turn up in Australia without a visa of some sort, and tourist visas specifically prohibit taking up paid employment.

Follow this link to the site that will give you all the info you need:

  2. you will need a fair bit of money in your pocket

but you will probably need to buy a car

    it will be easier.

and the food prices in Australia are reasonably acceptable

  3. Become a driver and prepared to buy car here.

Don't know what city you've set upon and that'll reflect on cost of living.

Embrace the sporting life and tv coverage that's rampant here.

Don't lose your licence through drink of drugs etc.

Keep within the law (don't get caught) and comply with visa conditions (don't get caught).

Get employer sponsorship, if you can or seek comprable "Shiela" to marry in the future.

  4. G'day

Things to do first when you arrive in Australia see http://www.immi.gov.au/living-in-austral... and info on settling here http://www.immi.gov.au/living-in-austral...

....and read the "Just Landed in Australia" Guide - alot of great info - http://www.justlanded.com/english/austra...

    Good Luck
