Tips on buying curtains?

I have never bought curtains before. I have just used plain ol white blinds. But now I have a 2 year old and replacing blinds has gotten ridiculous! I was told curtains should match your carpet, but I also kind of thought it should match your furniture and decorations? Please help any advice is great!
