Tips on painting/ decorating?

i want to repaint my skirting boards and door frames with a fresh l**k of gloss paint. Apart from making sure the old painted surfaces are clean what preparation do i need to do before applying new gloss on to old gloss paint?

You need to scuff sand 180-200 grit, also make sure to use oil enamel if you have oil enamel on the wood now, if you use acrylic over oil it will peel off even with a good prep. test the paint with a clean cloth and rubbing alcohol if the cloth does not remove the paint then you have to either prime first or use oil enamel.

A light rub down with 200 grade sandpaper to help the new coat of paint adhere to the old. Don't forget to brush off the dust this creates before applying the paint.

You can generally paint over semi-gloss, but you need to sand high-gloss (just a scuffing sand, not a full down-to-the-wood sand) or the new paint won't adhere very well. Remove the sanding dust with one of those Swiffer or Endust dusters.

Either way, door frames get very dirty so use TSP to clean them. TSP will also make the new paint adhere better.

I'm doing the same thing at the moment. I'm not sure about gloss paint because i didn't buy the paint but all i did was softly go over the door frames with a piece of sand paper then clean it as you know then you can paint!!

well that's all i did and its turning out good..

Rub it down with sandpaper to produce a key for the new paint to grip.
