Question:

To travel with dog or not?

My hubby and I decided to take a little sight-seeing trip around Oregon and to the Redwood Forests in CA in our RV. We'll be gone for a total of 9 days. We have a whippet/rhodesian mutt who is crate trained (we usually take her on short camping trips with us) but she is very much a people dog and misses us terribly. What do you think would be the least traumatic for her: Leaving her home with my brother watching her or taking her with us? Will the long truck rides be stressful for her? Will it be enjoyable to have a dog with us on the trip...or if we leave her will we miss her terribly? Any advice?

  1. I'd take her with you. I know plenty of Italian Greyhound owners who go RVing with their dogs all the time. One actually drove from California to Maine with potty breaks every 4-5 hours and they said it was so much better have their dogs with them.

  2. It's your dog. You know what's best.

When you traveled with her before, did she get car sick?

    Did she seem stressed out?

    Then ask yourself..

Will she be in the way of us having a good time?

Will she enjoy this trip or would she enjoy being at home?

If the RV is big enough to take the crate, I'd take her.

I take my dogs everywhere with me so I couldn't even imagine them missing out on a chance like that.

  3. If she is comfortable with your brother I would leave her with him (if you know he'll give her lots of attention).  Less stressful.  It's only a week, and she'll be in a familiar place.  I once took a dog camping and he ran off, didn't come back for hours, I was worried sick (he came back fine).  I wouldn't take a dog camping because of the worry that they might run away or get lost.

  4. leave at friends place
