Question:

Toe deformity caused by running?

I run about 10k every other day, and have been running for some years now. During this time, two of my toenails have stopped growing flat, instead growing in a solid "n" shape and bleeding underneath. They're very painful unless I completely cut them off, which looks awful. Now one of my big toes has started "mutating" in the same way, bleeding and swelling under the nail. What can I do? I always wear sensible shoes, running or not, and keep my nails short. I also wear a good pair of trainers (New Balance 736), which I change every 4-6 months.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  1. podiatrist.

They will do a wedge resection on the nail, which will make it grow back normally.

  2. There is a video on runnersworld.com about how to lace your shoes better so it doesn't cause bleeding under your toenails.
