Is it too late to start a garden? I really wanted to plant some stuff this year, being our first summer in our new house, but alot has happened and it kept getting pushed back, until it was forgotten about. Today while finally going through some more boxes i found all the seeds and seed starter things we had bought this spring. My boyfriend went a bit over board and bought alot of seeds, some of the things we wanted to plant was cherry tomatoes, regular tomatoes, marigolds, sun flowers, cucumbers, squash, morning Glory's, chives, green beans, carrots corn, green peppers. Can we still plant any of these? We live in zone 6-7. If we can plant them any advice you could give would be helpful. the morning Glory's we were going to plant by the pergola, I think cucumbers squash and green beans all need something to climb on right? the package doesn't say, but i think i remember my mom growing cucumbers and green beans on our chain link fence when we were little.

  1. man, I forgot what climate is like in your zone?  Just remember if you got frost in the autum and the spring, right now it is abit too late to plant any fruit or vegie in this season unless you got seed of spinach; carrot and green bean and marigold could be planted in the fall.  so you got to wait to the climate chills down a bit then saw them at the end of the summer.

The rest of seed you have got to saw the seed when spring comes.

  2. It's too late now.  Most of those plants take 60-90 days to mature.  Start them indoors in March with a seed starting kit.  I started late this year (April) and am just starting to get cucumbers, tomatoes etc. now.

  3. Go for it !

  4. You have a very ambitious plan.  I will advise a gradual start, to begin with. Also depends on  how much space you have ? Also the place you stay and the time of the year. Good Luck

  5. i would say you could  plant  a small late summer garden especially if you are in the  number 7 zone . i would look on the seed packages and pick a few that will mature in 90 or under as the cooler autumn weather will slow how fast they grow  and you can get fruit before  the first frost  etc . i would keep it small  , and this is all if the garden soil is prepped and ready to go  .
