Tottenham Hotspur continued their domestic winning run as they cruised to a 0-3 victory against Carlisle City in the Capital One Cup last night.
The North London club is now on a run of three consecutive domestic wins. Spurs won their first game in the Premier League against Reading at the Madejski Stadium, cruising to a 1-3 victory over the Royals.
This was followed by an unconvincing but important win at home against Queens Park http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rangers-c40314, which saw manager Andre Villas-Boas earn his first home win as Spurs boss.
Last night, the team travelled to face Carlisle City for their 3rd round league cup fixture. Goals from summer signing Jan Vertonghen, Gylfi Sigurdsson and youngster http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andros-Townsend-c6023 sent the club through to the next round of the competition.
Tottenham took the lead in the 37th minute through Belgian centre half Jan Vertonghen, who headed in a goal from a Sigurdsson free kick. This was the player’s first goal for the club since joining from Ajax in the summers, and he looks better
with every passing game.
Villas-Boas was pleased with his side’s performance as they managed to hold on and manage a clean sheet. The squad featured 8 changes from the team that played against QPR this past weekend, and had a number of youth players. However, the youngsters were
up to the task as they helped the side win the game.
The home side had its chances, but Spurs were effective in all areas of the pitch. Assistant manager Steffen Freund was delighted with the win and the spirit the side showed.
Speaking to the club’s official website, he said:
“It wasn’t easy in the first half, Carlisle played well. It was a fantastic ground, there was a lot of home support and everything prepared for a big game.”
“It was a test for our young team but in the end we created chances and deserved to win. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 is in top form, a fantastic performance, but the whole team deserved to win that game.”
“Michael Dawson came back in and player well as skipper, he led the team with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tom-Huddlestone-c35227 in front of him. I’m really happy because we won 3-0 and kept a clean sheet.”
Spurs will now travel to Carrow Road to face Norwich City in the next round.
