  1. i'll be backpacking for a month in Europe before school too!

but i'm from asia, not sure if u need all these.. but still hope it helps :-)

    get a isic card (http://www.istc.org/sisp/index.htm)

    get a eurail pass (www.raileurope.com)

check for the cheapest accommodation (www.hostelworld.com / www.booking.com) but i'd recommend finding more on internet cos there're still lots of hostels/hotels don't affiliate with these sites.

google map the locations of accommodation/sites

    get the local metro&street maps

surf online to read other's advices (www.tripadvisor.com)

borrow some travel books from libraries

these are basically all the things i do.. maybe u can tell us more about which places u want to go, so we can give more specific advices :)

  2. Definitely include these:

    - camera

    - some type of pouch to hold your money (preferably one of those ones that can hide under your clothes).

    - passport :P

    - water bottle

    - cell phone (with alarm!)

    - maps of the areas (GPS, especially on cell phones is a GREAT luxury!)

    - translation books for common expressions

    - medical/health insurance

    - clothing for all types of weather

    - umbrella

I wish I knew what type of tour you were doing. Are you backpacking and staying in hostels? Or will you be travelling from hotel to hotel?

  3. You got some nice answers already, but I'll add a little more.

As you are European, you can buy an InterRail pass:

    http://www.interrailnet.com/

Or if you want to safe a little more money, a bus pass:

    http://www.eurolines.com/

Bring not too much in clothing:

Two pairs of jeans and one pair of shorts.

A few T-shirts, a sweater and maybe a shirt with long sleeves.

A rain and wind proof jacket.

    Socks, underwear and swimming gear.

Shoes, bring the shoes you can walk on all day, every day and a second pair, to change into when you are in your hostel (or wherever) at night, you feet will thank you. You can bring bathroom slippers for that too.

A towel and the minimum in your toilet bag, like tester bottles for the things you use at home.

And take a camera and some kind of notebook to make a journal.

With that much in a smallish backpack you can walk around all day and are not limited to places with left luggage.

In my opinion the best places to sleep while traveling are the hostels, the Hosteling International ones as well as the independent ones.

But if you want to stretch your money a little farther, you might look into campsites, (but this will require much more luggage,) or couchsurfing:

    http://www.couchsurfing.com/

    http://www.hospitalityclub.org/

I have never used that, and I doubt I would, but the people who do are, on average, positive about it.

    Added:

If you travel on the lowest budget you can, you need at least 40 pound per day, for staying in hostels and eating out, think about 80 pound per day.

  4. book the air tickets in advance it will be cheaper then,, get it from ryanair or easyjet....and definetely select the countries you want to visit....

  5. condoms.
