Question:

Towing Boat with Ford Taurus?

I'm thinking of towing a boat and trailer that was 1100 pounds, with a 1991 ford tauras. I'll be towing it 800 miles (down I5 from Seattle to San Francisco. There will be four passages in the car weighing around 720 pounds and around 250 pounds of luggage in the trunk. Will a ford Taurus with a 3.0 L Vulcan motor be able to handle this load?

  1. The car has a tow rating of 2000 lbs.

What you describe would be dangerous and wreck your car's drive train.

1991 Taurus?  Its probably on its last leg anyhow.

  2. No, you already have exceeded the max towing capacity by the amount of luggage to be loaded and the boat&trailer.

Find another way to tow the boat to the location you need to, or risk paying lots of money to get your transmission rebuilt or replaced.

  3. It will likely make the trip but will do a lot of unnecessary damage to your car's motor. Try to avoid it.

  4. I DO NOT recommend this!  You will be exceeding the tow capacity/ GVWR of the car.

I would rent a U-haul pickup.. but that may not be able to carry 4 passangers if it has a standard cab.

Not only will you damage your engine/tranny..you could damage the frame.

  5. It may pull it, but you will be looking for a car dealership when you get San Fran. Lots of luck.

  6. Nope, that car would be very overloaded.  You would not only be endangering you're car mechanically, but you will most likely get pulled over for it and made to have someone with a truck pick up your boat and trailer or risk have it impounded.
