Training for youth counselor

if you were a manager what kind of training would you offer for a youth counselor?

Start with safety training.  What is and is not appropriate.  What the legal and job consequences will be for any inappropriate behavior on the part of the staff member.  What to do if a young person acts inappropriately towards the counselor.  What are your agencies procedures.  What to do if a young person discloses abuse or inappropriate behavior to the counselor.  

Move on to agency protocol and procedures.  Job expectations.  Training on any equipment used.  The person should be closely monitored (job shadowing) at first and gradually given more responsibility and independence.

Wow, OK as a 5th year summer camp counselor I can tell you that training needs to be at least 5 days (2-3 hours a day). You need to work on teaching the staff the get along with each other.you need to go over how to talk to parents, other staff members, and campers. Of course you need to go over camp games, lots of them. And any other traditions at your camp.
