  1. I assume that this is to do with a childhood studies type course. In early years terms, by transitions, they usually mean when we physically move from one place of care or education to another, so the first would probably be when a baby goes to a day nursery because its mother had returned to work. Then there would be movements within the nursery such as a transition into the toddler room, then preschool as they develop and become more mobile. Then there's the big transition between nursery and reception class and so it goes on.

Of course it continues throughout life with the move to junior and secondary school, college and university. These can be just as traumatic for both children and their families and the psychological effects shouldn't be under estimanted.

Moving between child carers is also transition - for example, if a child is regularly collected from school by a child minder, this would be described in early years terms, as a transition between settings.

Do you see what I mean? I imagine that the question you've been asked is trying to get you to think about the impact of these transitions on children and their families and what child care practitioners can do to minimalise the distress that children can go through.

    Hope this helps :-)

  2. Typically transitions for early years:

    From womb to real world

    From moses basket to crin

Into and out of the bath tub :)

    as they get older:

    from home to carer/school/playgroup etc

To any new setting or class

there's transitions inbetween such as from one room to the PE hall, or from lunch time to classroom etc!

People like Bowlby are good to study for transitions as it deals with separation and change!
