Transportation Problem Questions?

When you get your car towed are you allowed to sit with the driver while getting it towed? What do you do if you have a lot of people with you?

If your car breaks down 100 miles away then is it better to get it fixed at a local shop or get it towed home?

Are roadside assistance plans worth it through your insurance?

I am only a teen and will drive soon so I am asking. I am going to be traveling a lot but I do not have a really good car.

  1. Yes, you ride with the driver.

Yes, get roadside asst and towing.

It depends on how much you're going to pay for towing. If you have to get your car fixed out of town, usually the insurance company can recommend someone in the area - even if they aren't paying for it.

Carry an emergency kit in your car for the type of weather you may encounter. i.e. if it snows where you live, have a couple of blankets in the car.

Have reflective triangles to put in the road if you break down.

Jumper cables, flashlight, h2o, snacks, spare&jack, first aid kit, gas can.

  2. The tow truck driver will generally give you a lift back to the station with the car.

Towing your car over a long distance is very expensive and most roadside assistance plans won't cover the cost. You're better off getting it fixed at a nearby station.

Your average roadside assistance plan isn't very expensive. They give you local towing for free. They bring you gas when you run out of gas (though most make you pay for the actual gas). They give you a number to call for help when something happens on the road. Without a roadside assistance plan you are on your own.
