  1. sai gon plane to nha trang,[ its on you way and you dont want to go to vn and miss nha trang], plane[or overnight train] to da nang / hoi an, plane to ha noi,  bus to ha long and back to ha noi then plane back to sai gon..you might want to take a train to hue from da nang spend 2nights there then an overnight train to ha noi...you can take many nice day and 2-3 day trips out of ha noi to places like ha long , mai chau, sa pa....one other suggestion ... at least once in every town get up and out on the street EARLY 4:45am.. bring your camera.. you can always go back to bed later.. but vn comes alive in the early hours.. then it rests ALL of this can be done in 2weeks..but have a back up plan just in case .. and be flexable.. things often wont go the way you want in vn.. just go w/ the flow and in the end you'll have a great memory...

  2. Hoi An is halfway between HCMC and Ha Noi, and Ha Long is north of Ha Noi, so go figure. You might want to consider a weekend in Sapa - that is accessible from Ha Noi by overnight train and 1 hour bus ride.

  3. First Hoi An, as this is in Central Vietnam - there you should make your souvenir shopping!!! (as a tipp)

Then fly to Hanoi, from there you can book day trips to Halong Bay.

  4. Well i think the most logical way would be to fly to Hanoi from HCMC.  Stay in Hanoi for a day or 2 is all you really need join a group tour or even a private tour it all depends on what you prefer. As far as group tours the only thing is in the end they always feel a bit rushed to make sure they get you back on time and they to be honest don't really care on your overall experience. After Hanoi then go to Halong bay for either the 3days 2 night trip or the 2 days 1 night trip.  When you have finished with Halong Bay take a flight to Da Nang and either arrange a car before you leave to pick you up or get a taxi they will both run about 15-17 USD either way.  Stay in Hoi An and just relax for 3 or 4 days if you have the time.  Hoi AN is a nice relaxing little city and there are many nice hotels and resorts.  My favorite moderate priced Resort would be Hoi An Trails Resort.  If you get the walk in price your looking at about 80 USD but if you go through a good agency you can get it down to about 55-65 USD a night, and believe me it is definitely worth every penny for the quality of comfort that is offered at this Resort.
