I'm traveling to Canada tomorrow and I wanted to know what documents would I need. I searched the US embassy website already and I know that I would need a passport or other documentation that verifies that I am a US citizen. They said one option was a birth certificate, can I also use my SS card if I don't have my birth certificate handy??

Thank you for your help.

  1. No, ss doesn't help.  Those are your only 2 options.  Either a passport or both your birth certificate along with your drivers license.  if you fly, then only a passport will work.

Basically, if your birth certificate isn't handy, you aren't coming to Canada tomorrow.

  2. if you fly you need a passport. Drive, ferry or train use picture ID and a birth Certificate... bring all the stuff you have and if they make a fuss at the border start to cry and say you are going to say goodbye to someone who's in the hospital or to a funeral. I've done this a few times and it works beautifully

  3. I'm married to a Canadian Customs Officer,

A Voter registration card and a government issued photo identification (SS will not do as it has no photo on it).

A birth certificate and one other photo ID (again, government issued) or just a  passport.  Would be the requirement to get into Canada by land, water port and by plane.

To get back into the U.S. its technically a passport, but you can still get in without one flying and by land/water port. You simply need the two id's mentioned.

  4. If you are an American flying to Canada, you will need a passport. There are very few exceptions to that rule now, since Fall 2007.

If you are driving up here or arriving by boat, train, or bus, you are still allowed to use the following:

    1) A piece of ID that shows your nationality, such as a birth certificate or social security card.

    2) A government issued photo ID, such as a driver's license.
