I am traveling to Italy in the summer with 5 other friends (ages 23-27). We are going for 8-10 days however we are not sure if we should do a guided tour or come up with our own itinerary? What will come out cheaper?

  1. Do it yourself it's a lot cheaper.  We were in Italy last March and found the guided tours quite limiting.  March is not the high season so it was a little bit cheaper.  I did use a travel agent, but not a guided tour.  My husband and myself went for 9 days (Venice, Florence and Rome) and it was a little less than $2100.  That included airfare to/from NYC, transfer from the airport in Venice to the hotel, train to Florence and transfer from the hotel in Rome to the airport.  Oh and all the hotels that served breakfast.  We used Gate1, they often have great promotions.  We did a hotel only package in Rome and were able to fly out of Rome.  We did pay about 70 Euro for both of us to get to Rome via Rail.

  2. i would recommend you the 3 perls of Italy..

Rome, Venice, Florence..If you have time, dont miss Naples and the famous Pompey...

Milan also is wonderful. But first you have to see Rome, the eternal city...

  3. Go by yourself- guided tours are limiting.

Itinerary: Venice (2 days), Florence (2 days) , Siena (1 day), Orvieto (1 day), Perugia/Assisi (2 days), Rome (2 days). Maybe a bit of a rush though. You could drop Siena, Orvieto, Perugia or Assisi depending on taste.

    Maybe you'd like Cinque Terre?

  4. With your own itinerary: sure!

In 10 days you could visit Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome by train (considering Milan and Rome for the most important airport)...Buy a guide and choose the best thing, compose an itinerary and you are ready to come there!

  5. do your own thing is so much better that way and if you find yourself some place you dont care for you can leave

  6. Definitely do your own itinerary! No question. It will probably be around the same price or a little cheaper but WAY more fun. Guided tours are very sterile and you don't get a good idea of the area or culture or get to explore on your own.

I have done both and there is no comparison!  I would never sign up for a guided tour again!

  7. I would recommend your own itinerary, since this will be much cheaper. The sooner you book the better the deals will be.

    Here is a great site

    http://www.travelaroundsite.com

Use it all the time. They guarantee the best prices for airlines, hotels, cruises and more.

You could consider a cruise that sails around Italy.

Cruises can be a cheaper way to travel since you do not need hotel rooms

  8. Make up your own plans.  It's much more enjoyable.

  9. With that number you could possibly get a custom tour designed for you - on the other hand you may struggle to find accommodation if you are going at the height of summer For more italy travel tips check out http://lissiearticles.com/italy-travel-i...
