Question:

Trojan virus and Autorun.inf questions?

I use my USB a lot and I have no choice but to transfer data from other computers to my computer.

Thing is, most of the time I have to deal with the jumping viruses.

( I don't know what to call them, they usually jump from the computer to my usb)

So my questions are:

1. The viruses I usually encounter are trojans, and they usually come with Autrorun.inf, what does that mean?

2. How dangerous are they?

3. If they can jump from the computer I was using to my USB, can they jump from my USB to my computer?

4. If, so where (what file) would they usually hide in My computer?

5. My anti-virus usually takes care of the viruses, but Autorun.inf is still left behind, and I have to delete it manually, otherwise my USB can't be read without running autoplay. What should I do about this?

6. What anti-virus software should I get to avoid this altogether???

Thanks a lot for those who reply!

  1. 1. "autorun.inf" is a file which tells Windows what it should do when the media is inserted.  That is how, for example, program installers run when you put the CD into the drive.

    2.  The program can be very dangerous.  Anything you can do, so can whatever program is run automatically.

    3.  Yes, they can "jump" from the USB drive to your computer.  That's how computer viruses spread -- by copying themselves around by themselves.

    4.  They could hide anywhere on your computer.  In fact, programs called "rootkits" can hide themselves from virtually any program that isn't designed specifically to search for rootkits.

    5.  You can turn off autoplay, so that inserting the USB stick won't start the virus/trojan.  TweakUI (see below) is good for such things.  Then clean it up and delete the autorun.inf file.

    6.  Any decent up-to-date anti-virus should do the job.  Without knowing what virus/trojan it's infected with, I can't tell you if any specific one will work.

Note, too, that there are plenty of "rogue" anti-virus/anti-spyware programs out there, that claim they'll clean your system, but in fact infect it even worse.  SpyNoMore is (or "was", according to some people) one of those rogue programs.

  2. spynomore (spynomore.com) got rid of even the hardest to find/delete viruses on my computer. I would recommend it to anyone. Good Luck!

    It really helped me....

  4. Ok so ill answer these one at a time.

    1. Autorun.inf is the program that enables the virus or in this case a trojan to start itself as soon as it is in your USB or computer.

    2. It depends but some can be very dangerous i have met some that can steal your information from your computer.

    3.Yes.

4.They would usually hide in places that aren't easy to access.

5.Try adding autorun.inf to the things your computers firewall blocks.

6.I have had much the same problem you have had and i bought Norton Antivirus, it is about $50-$60 a year but i have exactly zero problems.

    I hope this helps you.
