True about background check?

Is it true you can get a criminalbackground check on someone at the police station. I live in NY and was told that if you have a valid reason(I have a signed application from a presperctive employee and their SS#) you can go to the local police station, pay a fee and get a backgound check on the person in a few days. Is it true? Anyone know anyother wasys besides the internet or private detective

you can in TN but the paper must have a notery stamp on it.

if you go online to do this DO NOT use People Finders to do the check. I paid them $49.95 for a back ground check, gave name DOB SS# everything and they sent me info on someone else. had to tell them i'd turn them in to the FTC if i didn't get my money back. I got my money back.
