Would it be considered weird for two straight guys who are friends backpacking in Europe to book only singles rather than doubles to economize...thus sleeping in the same bed?

  1. Well, yes. It's going to look weird.

While the explanation that you are two straight guys who are trying to save money is perfectly reasonable and sounds fine, most people won't ask questions, and the receptionist will probably be thinking your that you two are in that kind of relationship even if they act naturally about it. (depending on how small the place you spend the night at is, they might gossip with their friends too)

But really, if both of you are fine with sharing a bed, I don't think it should matter. When sleeping in tents with friends, we're all about 3 inches away from each other and only difference between sleeping in a bed that close and sleeping in a tent that close is that everyone is using a separate cover sheet. Thus you might consider asking for an extra cover sheet if the idea of sharing sheets bothers you or if you think your friend might end up hogging the sheet at night.

So unless you think the social awkwardness is worth shelling out the extra cash to get a double, I think you'll be alright. It looks weird, but you are both straight and if you don't tell anyone, who will know.

  2. Aye! n' U wont get a single for 2 people, "single" being the operative word!

  3. Yes, it would be considered strange, and it would not work either.

You might be able to book a single, but when the two of you show up you will either be send away (maybe both) or if the rooms is a double sold for single use, have to pay extra.

Yes, at times you might be able to sneak in, but you can be sure to be found out a few times, and than the reaction will not be mild. (Not for sharing a bed, they can not be bothered about two guys making love to each other, even less sharing a bed to sleep, but for 'stealing' as you will not pay the money due.)

The better way to economize is to use hostels.

If you book two beds in the biggest size dorm you will safe more and be legal at the same time so you do not need to wonder all the time when they will come in to check on clean towels and such.

  4. Nah...why worry, anyway?  who is going to ever see you again?

And, while a double will cost almost twice as much as a single, a single, used as a double will only cost a nominal bit extra...like probably about 15 - 25 € max.
